Kenntnisprüfung: the standard route since the recognition reform

The direct knowledge examination is now the normal path and document review the exception on request. What that changes about your planning.

If you studied medicine abroad, you have to show that your training is equivalent to the German one. There are two routes: a comparison of your study documents, and the Kenntnisprüfung.

What changed

The Federal Ministry of Health describes the document-based equivalence assessment as particularly burdensome. The reform of recognition in the health professions therefore makes the direct Kenntnisprüfung the standard route, with document review still available on request.

For your planning, that means: prepare for the exam rather than hope for a positive document decision. If the document review turns out to be enough, you have gained time. The other way round, you lose months.

What is examined

The Kenntnisprüfung is not a full second state examination. Its scope and subjects are set and published by your authority. Read your own authority's requirements rather than a report from someone in another state, because the scope differs.

Dates and capacity

No nationwide figure for pending knowledge examinations is published. Exam dates and capacity differ between states, and that is one of the few solid reasons to choose your authority deliberately. Ask the authority directly for the next available dates before you commit.

Sequence

The medical-language examination is taken at the chamber of physicians; the Kenntnisprüfung sits inside the authority's procedure. Two different bodies, two separate registrations. Clarify early which order your authority wants to see them in.
